Slate Auto

About Slate
Slate is a new American automaker focused on delivering a radically personalizable, reliable, and affordable electric truck. The Slate truck is fully customizable and can transform from a 2-seat pickup to a 5-seat SUV.
RepairPal is Slate's Certified service network. Slate owners will be directed to RepairPal Certified shops for service, repairs, and accessory installation.
Slate is scheduled to begin deliveries in late 2026, fulfilling pre-orders first.
How This Benefits Your Shop
- New Customers Routed to You - Slate owners will be directed to RepairPal Certified shops through RepairPal's nationwide network. Your shop will be featured in the Slate app and promoted for accessory upfits.
- Choose Your Participation Level - There are 3 categories: High Voltage, Low Voltage, and Accessory Installation. You can choose which (or all) you participate in based on your shop's capabilities and willingness.
- Warranty Work Paid by Slate - While under factory warranty, all repairs are paid for by Slate directly via ACH. You will charge your normal warranty labor rate.
- Customer-Pay Revenue - Scheduled maintenance, accessory installation, and vehicle conversions (e.g., truck-to-SUV kits) are customer pay, creating additional income streams for your shop.
- Free Training via Slate University - Repair manuals, videos, training modules, and an expert hotline, all available at no cost. In extreme circumstances, Slate can even send an expert to your shop.

Work Categories & Requirements
Accessory Installation
No additional EV-specific certification needed. RepairPal shops will be trained on Slate procedures for accessory installation. Examples include SUV conversion kits (estimated ~4 hours, no special tools required) and vinyl wrapping.
Low Voltage Repair
Low voltage work refers primarily to the car's 12V system. RepairPal will not require evidence of these tools for LV work, but here's the complete list of requirements:
- Safety equipment required by your state or local government (gloves, eye protection, steel toe shoes, hearing protection)
- Digital scan tool
- Insulated hand tools
- Level 2 charging capability (240V) - highly encouraged but not required
- General understanding of EVs and HV basic training:
- ASE or equivalent training on EVs, Hybrid, Plug-In Hybrid (ASE L3 preferred but not required)
- OR OEM equivalent training (Ford, GM, Stellantis, VW, Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, or similar) on basics of EVs
- Low voltage familiarity with 12V systems (airbag, sensors, seat belt sensors, ignition, steering column, ADAS modules, cameras, brakes, tires, wiper motors, key FOBs, door latches, instrument panel, lighting)
- Slate basic training (forthcoming through Slate University)
High Voltage Repair
High voltage work covers electrical and battery-related repairs. Requirements include:
Certifications:
- Top-tier EV certification: ASE EV1 + EV2 + L3 (or equivalent)
- Completed High Voltage industry-standard training as required by local government (e.g., OSHA)
- xEV Safety Certification by ASE (Level 2 High-Voltage Vehicle Technician, EV2)
- OR OEM HV training (e.g., Ford, GM, Stellantis, VW, Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, etc.)
Tools and Equipment:
- Insulated gloves
- Face shield
- Hard hat
- Fireproof/retardant long-sleeve jacket or shirt
- Hearing protection
- Work boots
- Safety hook
- Lock out/tag out device
- Floor signage and HV warning signs
- Insulated hand tools (rated to 1,000V)
- Digital ohm meter (e.g., Fluke 1587, 1,000V rated)
- Battery lift table or equivalent
Estimated cost to become HV-equipped: $2,000-$5,000 depending on tool sources.
Payment & Billing
- Warranty repairs: Paid directly by Slate via ACH. You charge your normal warranty labor rate.
- Accessory installation (customer-purchased parts): Customer pay. You may charge your warranty labor rate or set a secondary customer-supplied-parts rate with RepairPal. Note: the higher your rate, the fewer installation opportunities you'll receive - competitive pricing is important.
- Scheduled maintenance: Customer pay. Maintenance items will be relatively limited since it's an EV (tires, brakes, fluids, wipers).
Please note: We will reach out to you via email with instructions for setting up your payment account with Slate.
Training & Support
All information about fixing a Slate will be available online at no cost (only high voltage info will be restricted to authorized service centers). Slate is rolling out Slate University so you and your technicians can become proficient in Slate repair.
Slate University will include:
- Repair manuals
- Videos & training modules
- Expert hotline for questions
- On-site expert visits in extreme circumstances
Additionally, Slate has designed the truck for simplicity and serviceability - common fastener types, minimal single-use parts, easily removable panels, simplified EV architecture, off-the-shelf fluids, and instructional QR codes throughout the vehicle.
Labor Times (FRTs)
- Flat Rate Times are based on detailed time studies by trained technicians.
- They include all repair aspects: part movement, component prep, and handling sensitive items.
- FRTs are measured in decimal hours for accurate warranty submissions.
- If an FRT seems inaccurate, feedback is welcomed - shops will have direct access to Slate's Service Engineering team via email.
FAQs
When does this car come out?
The Slate is scheduled to come out in late 2026. They will be fulfilling pre-orders first. There are already hundreds of thousands of reservations nationwide.
Can I pick and choose what type of work I want to do on Slates?
Yes. There are 3 categories: High Voltage, Low Voltage, and Accessory Installation. You will be able to choose which (or all) of these categories you participate in based on your shop's capabilities and willingness.
Is this warranty work, customer pay, or both?
It can be both. While the vehicle will be under factory warranty, any repairs will be paid for by Slate. Regularly scheduled maintenance will also be customer pay. Accessory installation will be customer pay.
I've heard that Slates can be converted into SUVs with kits they sell. What do they pay and do I need any special tools?
Slate's initial studies say that these jobs should take you around 4 hours to complete and you do not need any special tools. The first couple times could take you a little longer as you gain more experience.
Do I have to pay for training materials or courses? How will I know how to work on these Slates?
All information about fixing a Slate will be available online for no cost (only high voltage info will be restricted to authorized service centers like you). Slate will be rolling out Slate University so that you and your technicians can become proficient in Slate repair through training modules. Slate U will include repair manuals, videos, and other resources. They will have an expert hotline available for questions if you get stuck. In extreme circumstances, they can send out an expert to help.
How much do you think it costs to become a high voltage shop?
Slate ballparks the cost to acquire the tools necessary to become HV certified between $2,000-$5,000 depending on the source of tools and expense of the battery lift table, which is the most expensive tool needed. Slate is willing to use their purchasing power to acquire battery lift tables and 1,000V multimeters at wholesale cost and sell them to committed shops at cost. Training is fairly economical - an HV certified tech will need ASE EV1, EV2, and L3 certifications, and the cost to take these tests should be under $400.
How has Slate determined suggested labor times for repairs?
Flat Rate Times (FRTs) are based on detailed time studies by trained technicians. They include all repair aspects: part movement, component prep, and handling sensitive items. FRTs are measured in decimal hours for accurate warranty submissions. If an FRT seems inaccurate, feedback is welcomed by the Service Engineering team - shops will have access to an email address that goes directly to Slate.
Tell me more about payment.
If it's a warranty repair covered by Slate, you'll be paid directly from them via ACH. You will charge your normal warranty labor rate. If it is a Slate accessory purchased by the customer and brought in for installation, it is customer pay. You may charge your warranty labor rate or enter a secondary rate with RepairPal for customer-supplied parts. There will also be regularly scheduled maintenance items, but they will be relatively limited since it's an EV - things like tires, brakes, fluids, and wipers.
